Perhaps no team needs something to forget last season as San Francisco, which comes off a 2-14 season in Chip Kelly's only year. New coach Kyle Shanahan made the bonehead decision to not run the ball in a crucial situation as offensive coordinator of the Falcons in the Super Bowl. The 49ers will look to be more aggressive with a balanced offense, and QB Brian Hoyer played with Shanahan in Cleveland in 2014. The Niners made some trades and free agent acquisitions to strengthen the offensive line and also picked up veteran wide receiver Pierre Garcon. Kansas City coach Andy Reid is 34-38 straight up and 32-36-4 ATS in preseason and lost 17-16 as a four-point favorite to Seattle in the first week last year. The Chiefs have the most players back from last year's team, and Alex Smith's backups are rookie Patrick Mahomes, Tyler Bray, and Joel Stave. Bray has not played since the 2013 preseason, and Stave saw action in the 2016 preseason, but did not appear in the regular season. Hoyer's backups are Matt Barkley, CJ Beathard, and Nick Mullens. Barkley started six games for Chicago last season and completed 59.7 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Beathard was drafted in the third round of the 2017 draft, and Mullens signed as an undrafted free agent in May. Motivation is a big factor in preseason, and San Francisco should have it in Shanahan's first test. Take the 49ers. Also take the UNDER. Kansas City's preseason games last season averaged just 32 total points, with home games tallying just 28.5 per game. Take San Francisco and the UNDER.
