Supreme Court legalizes sports betting in United States
United States Supreme Court lets states legalize sports gambling!
What does it all mean?
Sports Betting is no longer illegal at a federal level after the US Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA).
Legal Sports Betting will now be up to the states.
How did we get here? This started back nearly a decade ago with NJ Senator Raymond Lesniak filed a federal lawsuit to overturn PASPA. Governor Chris Christie joined the fray in 2012 and NJ has been battling the federal government and the leagues ever since.
“Just as Congress lacks the power to order a state legislature not to enact a law authorizing sports gambling, it may not order a state legislature to refrain from enacting a law licensing sports gambling,” wrote Justice Samuel Alito in the decision.
New Jsey residents will be able to bet the NBA finals. 20 states have introduced some sort of legislation. NJ has passed it and is ready to go. Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New York, Delaware are close.
