Carolina at Winnipeg

Premium Pick

Carolina improved by 15 points last season and looks to continue that trend with the additions of wingers Lee Stempniak and Viktor Stalberg plus Teuvo Teravainen and Bryan Bickell. Cam Ward returns in goal and Eddie Lack is a capable backup. The defense is the Hurricanes' strong point led by Justin Faulk, who also scored 16 goals last season, which tied him for seventh among defensemen  Winnipeg plunged to 78 points in 2015-16 and the Jets finished last in power-play percentage and #25 in penalty-killing. Forward Patrik Laine was the second overall pick and looked great in World Cup play.  Defense, which ranked #22, is still a concern as Michael Hutchinson and Connor Hellebuyck will split duties. The Hurricanes won both meetings last year and Winnipeg has lost 14 of its last 16 against the Eastern Conference. Take the Hurricanes.
