Free NHL Prop Picks

NHL proposition betting is increasing in popularity. They center around individual team totals and players, such as how many goals a star offensive player will get, Over/Under 1.5 combined goals and assists another player will have, or head-to-head NHL matchups featuring the team's two best players. NHL team props are "Which team will score first?" and "Over/Under 3.5 goals" for a particular team. It means more work for handicappers, but also offers more NHL pick options for bettors to exploit soft winning odds.

Why Use Free NHL Hockey Prop Picks

Prop odds are compiled based on stats. But there are games where players are more likely to have a better or worse effort than their season average based on the opponent they're playing. This is the same as handicapping NHL teams, moneylines, and totals. If a star offensive player averages 1.5 goals and assists per game, that might be his NHL over/under pro number. However, if he's facing the best defensive unit in the NHL, it's going to be a tough night for his team to score goals. Hockey data collection, including getting opinions from professional bettors, is the way to identifying potential winning prop picks each night. Betting Value in Free NHL Prop Picks

Team prop totals can offer outstanding wagering value. If you find a game that you like OVER the total for various reasons, don't stop there. Take a look at the individual prop team totals. If you believe the favorite is going to have a big night offensively (you would like the whole game to be high scoring), then there's a good chance that they'll go OVER their individual team total number. If the total on the game is 6 and the team total is 3.5, those are two strong numbers with wagering value. If you wager both of them OVER, you can cash both in a 5-4 game. It's also possible the favorite could win 4-1, so you'd lose the total but still win the individual team total, breaking even on the game. After all, money not lost is still money gained.

NHL Team Props

These props are based around the entire team, so you should ask questions such as are they going to score Over/Under 3.5 goals? Style of play is a key part of it as well, which is dictated by the head coach. In one recent season, the Buffalo Sabres went uptempo with a youth movement and were one of the best scoring teams in the league. But their defense was one of the weakest. They went on a 16-4 run OVER the total during one stretch scoring 4 or more goals 12 times. In another season, the LA Kings were strong defensively but lacked scoring punch and shots on net. They went on a 21-8-1 run UNDER the total scoring 2 or fewer goals 13 times. And when teams that are similar meet, such as two high-flying offensive teams, it increases the shots on net, the pace of the game, and the odds of a potentially high-scoring affair. There was one season where the two highest scoring teams in the NHL were Toronto and Florida, and the first two encounters were NHL scores of 5-2 and 7-6.

Matchup Angles

Some offensive players have their best games against division rivals. But take a closer look: maybe that rival is a poor defensive team? Or maybe the opposing forwards assigned to guard that player are below-average. That's the type of hockey matchup that a player can put the odds in their favor and take advantage of. More to the point, there are reasons why that player consistently has good scoring games against one team. As a handicapper, look back at the last few meetings between teams to see if one player had big games with scoring and assists. It can work with goalies, too. Some goalies consistently dominate one team, so it's likely he's facing an offense that has multiple flaws. It's not just handicappers who look for matchup edges - coaches do it, too, trying to put certain players in position to excel on offense or defense. It's all about identifying the matchups to put the prop betting edges in your favor.

Defensive Capabilities

An NHL center or forward who is a high scorer can get shut out when facing a strong defensive team. Hot goalies and physical defenders in front of the net will limit the sharp-shooting potential of even the best scorers. In one recent season, the New York Rangers were in the middle of the pack in goals scored, but one of the best defensive teams in the NHL. Their style was a defensive approach, which can work against below-average offensive teams as well as some of the top NHL scorers. They faced the second-highest scoring team in the league three times that season, Toronto. The first two ended in 2-1 finals while the third was a 6-3 New York win. So they held the powerhouse Maple Leafs' offense to 6 goals in three meetings. Toronto's top offensive player had no goals and two assists in the three contests.
