Eric Lauer got seven starts after the All-Star break and pitched well enough to be the Opening Day starter today. The left-hander allowed 12 earned runs in 34 1/3 innings after the break and he pitched better at home with a 3.99 ERA compared to 4.73 on the road. San Diego still is in rebuilding mode, but so are the Giants, who were 73-89 in 2018, which actually was nine games better than in 2017. Madison Bumgarner is not as dominant as he was in the days when the Giants won the World Series against the Royals and he was only 2-4 with a 4.97 ERA on the road last season. San Francisco lost 21 of its last 26 road games and 35 of its last 52 overall. San Diego won four of Lauer's last five starts. Go with the Padres.
