The Washington Nationals have been the big surprise this season as they continue to hold down first place in the NL East. While Philadelphia is the team lauded for having the best pitching, Washington has been better and has a better pen as well. Jordan Zimmermann has risen to the top of the list with his stellar 2.14 ERA, but owns just a 2-3 record. The Nats’ pitching has been sensational, but when you have a pitcher with an ERA hovering around 2 with a 2-3 record the problem is a lack of offense. James McDonald suffers a similar fate in Pittsburgh with an ERA of 2.42, but stands just 2-2. The result for Pittsburgh is just 22 of their last 80 vs. a pitcher with a WHIP of under 1.15 have eclipsed the total.
