Kansas City was going to start Danny Duffy, but he missed the team flight and is suspended for this game. It comes at a bad time for the Royals, who currently are on a winning streak, although the last three wins have come against the hapless Pirates. Detroit had, for a while, entertained thoughts of making the postseason, but the Tigers' bats have been quiet lately scoring only five runs their last three games. Nevertheless, the teams have split two meetings this season, and the Royals still are 23-48 after a win dating to last season and 18-40 versus opponents that scored two or fewer runs their previous game.
