It is pretty much just a formality now, and barring a total collapse, the Kansas City Royals will make the playoffs for the first time since 1985. They certainly have a great option on the mound for this one with James Shields going against the Chicago White Sox. Shields is finely tuned for the playoffs as he has allowed just 4 runs over his last four starts. Jose Quintana has had a very solid year for Chicago, but despite a 3.22 ERA he has a losing record. Like Chris Sale last night, who allowed 1 run through six frames, and then watched the pen blow up another potential win, Quintana has suffered a similar fate this season. He has another issue here as he has never beaten the Royals, and owns an 0-5 record against them. If Seattle loses to Toronto this afternoon, KC takes the field knowing a win clinches it. Take Kansas City.
