The New York Yankees suffered a disappointing loss in the opener with yet another extra inning game as the Tigers took a 1-0 lead with a 6-4 win in 12 innings. The Yankees once again had a heroic effort by Raul Ibanez who homered in the ninth to tie the game. The Yanks suffered a huge blow when Derek Jeter broke his ankle and will not play the rest of the series. That should serve as a rallying point for the Yanks and with Hiroki Kuroda facing Anibel Sanchez, they have an edge on the mound. Kuroda's last 16 starts have seen opponents score more than 4 runs just two times as he has pitched well all season, allowing just 6 runs total in his last three outings. Sanchez was roughed up for 7 runs in his only start on the season vs. New York, lasting just three innings. The Tigers are 0-5 in Sanchez' last five starts vs. a winning team and he has not beaten one in a Detroit uniform since coming over from Miami. The Yanks have been tough off a loss where they are 21-6 in their last 27 following a setback. Play on New York.
