New York bred has improved dramatically since coming back from almost a four month layoff in early May. He's worked faster here on a consistent basis for his return and is at his favorite distance (3-2-1-0). I like his chances.
2nd pick: #12 (Tom's Ready) (12-1) - When last in action, strong finisher rallied from far back to win the G2 Woody Stephens Stakes at this distance June 11 at Belmont. He was a bit more than a length better than 'Fish Trappe Road' that afternoon and should be finishing fast again in this spot.
3rd pick: #13 (Drefong) (4-1) - One of two entered by trainer Bob Baffert and the pair race uncoupled. Lightly-raced and quick from the gate, speedy son of 'Gio Ponti' has won three in a row on the So. California circuit. $450,000 purchase was working fast at Del Mar before heading east and colt draws a fine outside post at this seven furlong distance to shoot to the early lead. Dangerous.
4th pick: #6 (Mohaymen) (5-1) - After winning his first five starts, $2,200,000 son of 'Tapit' has lost three in a row. That said, he finished a respectable fourth in this year's Kentucky Derby (G1) and he stumbled at the break in the local Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) July 30. Working fast since, trainer Kiaran McLaughlin is cutting him back in distance for this attempt.
5th pick: #9 (Jazzy Times) (8-1) - The second of the Baffert pair, lightly-raced colt has gone 4-2-1-1 so far, all coming in sprints on the dirt. He was an easy winner over weaker at Del Mar July 31 and $460K colt earned himself a triple digit number that afternoon. Working fast before coming to the Spa and he can't be eliminated.
