Top pick: #1 (CELESTIAL COMET) - Son of "Smart Strike" finished a strong second in his seasonal debut here on Jan. 3. Colt had not seen action since last Spring at Keeneland, and his return race was excellent. Trainer Bill Mott has given him 40 days to recover and avoid a "bounce." Draws the rail, and the nine-furlong distance is perfect.
2nd pick: #9 (Ballast) - Veteran turf performer and former stakes winner will be very difficult to beat in this spot. In shape, loves the distance, and is accustomed to facing tougher. Most likely winner if the top selection fails.
3rd pick: #2 (Bujagali) - Probable pace-setter tired on Jan. 24 after chasing a fast pace from an outside post. He held well until the last 1/16th. Similsr scenario led to a win last winter on this course. The horse to catch.
4th pick: #3 (Prairie Fox) - Lightly-raced colt won at Calder in later December, and it's encouraging that he's making another strt without needing a lengthy layoff (as in the past). Late threat.
