Sam Houston State at BYU

BYU expects to have a much-improved defense with several transfers, including All-America cornerback Eddie Heckard and linemen Jackson Cravens, A.J. Vongphachanh and Isaiah Bagnah. The Cougars also have a new defensive coordinator, Jay Hill, who coached at Weber State. Kedon Slovis will start at quarterback following stints at USC and Pittsburgh. They return eight defensive starters, and allowed only 21 points per game in 2022, which was important, as they only scored 18 per game. The offense will be somewhat better this year as several players will return after retaining their eligibility by playing limited games.
