Georgia Southern has a new coach in Clay Helton, the former USC coach, who is expected to use his reputation from a Power-5 conference to help recruiting at the Sun Belt school. The Eagles do return 14 starters from last year's squad that finished 3-9 after winning 25 games the three previous years. The Eagles no longer will have an exclusively option attack and will have a more balanced offense although they do have depth at running back and experience on the offensive line. Senior Kyle Vantrease is the new starter at quarterback after transferring from Buffalo where he threw for 1,861 yards and completed 61.5 percent of his passes in 2021. Gerald Green ran for 423 yards with five touchdowns and Jalen White rushed for 383 yards and four TDs last season for the Eagles. Georgia Southern returns six starters on defense and will have an improved secondary led by safety Anthony Wilson II, who led the team in tackles. Morgan State finished 2-9 last season while losing their final eight games (2-6 ATS) and the Bears are 3-8 ATS their past 11 non-conference games and 4-10 ATS their past 12 September games. The Eagles have covered nine of their past 13 home games. and they are 15-6 UNDER their past 21 September games and 8-3 UNDER their past 11 non-conference games.
