Miami Ohio went 9-3 UNDER in 2022 while averaging only 20 points per game and allowing 22.6 and the offense suffered with the loss of Brett Gabbert, who started only four games due to a broken collarbone. Gabbert is back this year with an offense that returns only five starters and an entire new receiving corps. The Redhawks had the top-ranked defense in the conference and return seven, including three starters on the defensive line. Miami Florida endured another disappointing season finishing 5-7 and missing out on a bowl game and second-year coach Mario Cristobal hopes the new offensive coordinator, Shannon Dawson, will ignite the passing game. Hurricanes QB Tyler Van Dyke suffered a thumb injury in practice, but says he will start this game. Van Dyke struggled last year after passing for 2,931 yards in 2021. The Hurricanes averaged only 15.6 points their last five games and it may take time to install the new offense.
