BYU will join the independent ranks this season, while Texas tries to rebound from a horrific season by Longhorn standards. Texas is supposed to do just that, but many said the same thing about last year's team. They executed against Rice in a 34-9 win, but BYU presents a much more formidable foe. A lot of the Texas success, or failure, will be tied to Garrett Gilbert. Gilbert just hasn't been the QB many expected him to be at Texas, and he still has a lot of growing up to do, and that will leave the Horns vulnerable early. The Cougars are very talented and deep in the skill position areas on offense. The BYU defense is strong up front, but could be exposed in the secondary, but Gilbert hasn't shown the consistent ability to exploit that yet. The Cougars have been driven by momentum, and are 8-1 ATS after allowing 100 or less on the ground in their last game and 5-0 ATS after a win. The Horns have the reputation, and that usually means line value on the other side as they are 5-15-1 ATS in their last 21 vs. a winning team. Play on BYU in this one.
