Southern Mississippi has some new looks with a deep guard roster. 6-6 junior guard Christian Watson scored 17 points as Southern Miss beat Bowling Green 77-68 in the season opener on Monday. Guard Neftali Alvarez played (14 points) after sitting out all of last year with a foot injury. The team shot 49.18% from the field and hit 12-of-14 free throws. UAB lost its opener at home, 67-62, to Vermont. This team won the American Athletic Conference last year and is expected to be one of the top teams again behind senior forward Yaxel Lendeborg. They averaged 77.5 points in conference action last year with an uptempo style as the defense was 10th in the 14-team conference in points given up and 12th in field goal shooting allowed.
