The big NBA weekend is over and Monday starts a new stretch of practice and real games. Teams off emotional games can be in a down spot as the new week begins. Look at the NBA schedule. If a team has a big matchup on Saturday against a division rival and another division coming up on Tuesday or Wednesday, who are they playing on Monday? Many times it will be a non-conference game or one against a weaker team. These are called "sandwich spots" as it's a weaker opponent sandwiched around two far more meaningful contests. It can also be called a "look-ahead spot" where a team is more focused on the next game than a Monday non-conference tilt. Big favorites in this spot aren't as motivated to play four hard full quarters. Or, the head coach is anticipating an easier game and limits the minutes of his best players. All of which give multiple edges to the overlooked underdog.

Team Totals

Sides and totals get most of the betting action but don't pass on props. Team totals are always worth a look. You can wager on one team to score Over/Under 106.5 points, for instance. The handicapping factors to examine are how many days of rest are working on, what style of play do they prefer, and the defensive capabilities of their opponent that night. If they played the night before and are in the second of a back-to-back spot, check the minutes of the starters from last night. Did three starters top 34 minutes? Did the game go overtime? Was it a close game, so it was intense and tight for four-plus quarters? That will give an indication of how rested or tired they might be on Monday night. And does the team they're playing tonight play uptempo, or do they slow things down with a choking defense? All of this allows you to judge whether they will go Over or Under their team scoring average.

Live Dogs

Home underdogs are always worth a look in the NBA. That means they're weak teams or they're playing a much better opponent. A much better opponent on paper, anyway. Because the games aren't played on paper - they're on the court with real athletes playing for pride in front of paying customers. Teams don't always have incentive or motivation to give it their all on the road, but on their home court, there are all kinds of reasons for a winning effort. Home underdogs can offer wagering value on the point spread as well as on the Moneyline. Most NBA teams have a better home record than on the road and many have significantly better performances at home. In one recent campaign, the Wizards and Lakers both had winning home marks but were 14-27 and 12-29 away from home. That same season, the Atlanta Hawks were 27-14 straight up at home, but 16-25 away. It appears as though they could beat anyone on their home court, but a totally different group of players were wearing the same uniforms on the road!
