Son of 'City Zip' rallied to finish fourth when debuting in a 5 furlong grass sprint Aug. 9 at Del Mar. In his follow up on the Los Alamitos dirt Sept. 8 he closed to finish second in a very fast contest. Back on the turf, trainer Bob Baffert stretches him out a bit in distance.
2nd pick: #2 (Impression) (3-1) - One of two entered by trainer Rich Mandella, 4-year-old rallied to finish third in a five furlong grass sprint at Del Mar Sept. 1. It was his first race since June 18 of 2016 and first for Mandella. Working fast since, he's dangerous with Mike Smith back on the re-ride.
3rd pick: #10 (Avalanche) (8-1) - One of two in here from trainer John Sadler, grey colt hasn't run since Jan. 16. He rallied to check in a close up fourth that day and it came at this level and distance. Working steadily, he's a stretch threat if ready.
4th pick: #7 (Thorpe d'Oro) (12-1) - A big disappointment so far, trainer Doug O'Neill switches this $360,000 son of 'Medaglia d'Oro' to the grass for the first time. Very competitive in his first pair, his form has gone bad in four subsequent starts. Bred to handle the grass, his early speed makes him a threat at a big price.
