Professional golfers don't participate in tournaments for fun. They've been honing their craft on the fairways for years and are in it to win it. The same thing applies to wagering. The average bettor is in it for fun, to simply have action as a golf tournament unfolds. An average bettor doesn't win money, either. You can only beat the betting odds consistently by putting the time in with an expert, in-depth knowledge of the mechanics of handicapping.

Why Use Expert Golf Picks

There are reasons behind the odds attached to each golfer and head-to-head matchups. Professional bettors understand those details and can line them up to help predict a golfer's performance. Casual bettors, on the other hand, have little insight and no interest in how golf metrics align or don't align with posted odds. The road to becoming a superior golfing handicapper is all about building the layers of golf betting expertise one informative brick at a time.

Betting Value in Expert Golf Picks

A favorite in a golf tournament should be around 4-to-1 odds. The average bettor thinks, "It makes sense that this golfer is one of the favorites as he's one of the top golfers in the world." Expert bettors look at the same odds but conclude, "There are multiple metrics that show that this golfer is not going to play as well on this course. The golfer is overvalued by oddsmakers, while three others might be undervalued." It takes a trained eye and a disciplined approach to identify the odds that accurately reflect upcoming golf action.

Expert Golf Picks Betting Strategy

Recent Form

Consistency tells a lot about whether a golfer is at the top of their game. Examine how many Top 10 or Top 30 finishes a golfer has had throughout the current season. Even a golfer with far fewer high finishes - or none - can still be very good and worth wagering on. You might find they rarely fail to make the cut and finish, say, in the top 20 to top 50 often. A golfer's recent form is more important than their overall World Golf Ranking or the number of tournaments they've won.

Strokes Gained

An excellent golf betting metric to become familiar with is Strokes Gained. This measures a golfer's performance taking into account the distance to the hole, the shot length, the type of lie, and putting. This puts a ranking to the average number of strokes golfers pick up. There are offshoots of Strokes Gained, as well, such as Tee-to-Green (excluding putting) and Around-the-Green (strokes gained on shots within 30 yards of the edge of the green). The highest-ranked golfers in Strokes Gained are a nice combination of power off the tee, accuracy, and quality fairway play.

Injuries

Injuries are the great downward equalizer. They're capable of making a great golfer average or force a normally reliable golfer to not even make the cut. Golf tournament injuries aren't often debilitating, either. A golfer with a serious injury or virus that saps energy won't even participate. But many golfers are dealing with nagging minor ailments that can affect play. They're also not always easy to find, which requires golf handicappers to do plenty of digging to identify them. Newspaper accounts will hint at them, such as "Last week this golfer was dealing with a hamstring problem that contributed to his poor performance on the final 9 holes." Since golf tournaments are a physically grinding game - spending four days walking four hours for 18 holes while swinging different sizes of clubs - an astute handicapper makes a note of revealing injury tidbits.
